The “In Plain Sight” Gown
This dress pays homage to the brave act of navigating in a world that was not structured for you, but still finding and creating beauty along the way. My ancestors did just that, and I found strength within their ingenuity and creativity to harness my own, but also to give me the voice to tell my story through my art.
This dress was made with several quilt block pattern designs used in the Freedom Quilts, which in plain sight, aided enslaved peoples in their journey to freedom. The purpose of these quilts carried information that shaped destinies; they held signals and signs.
